This period saw a rapid increase in the city’s population, from 220,000 in 1965 to 500,000 in 1983, for example. In the Funabashi Station area, large-scale retail stores opened successively and transformed the commercial landscape. An urban infrastructure was developed in Funabashi with an eye on turning it into a vibrant modern city.
