In recent years hard clams, which are found in shoals called "Sanbanze" on the southern side of Funabashi City, have become the local specialty of the city.They are originally native to America, but it is thought that they were brought to Japan on trading vessels, where they found their way into the water on the ships that was used to maintain balance.From around the year 2000, they were confirmed to inhabit the marine area near Funabashi, where they have become popular as a new local specialty.
 In Funabashi, they are sold cooked as sakamushi (food steamed with alcohol) and tsukudani (food boiled in soy sauce), and some shops also use them as ingredients in gratin or pizza.
