This area is famous as one of the world's most prominent "electric towns."
Akihabara started as a post-World War II black market for radio parts and, now, many stores such as large scale mass electronic appliance retailers, electronic parts shops and junk parts shops litter the streets. There are also many duty-free shops, and the area is a popular spot where customers can easily buy high-quality Japanese electronic goods.
Furthermore, Akihabara is also an "otaku" cultural center for manga, anime, idol singers, maid cafes, and cosplay. If you are interested in Japanese anime, games, or idols, you should definitely visit Akihabara at least once.
