Odense City is located on Funen Island, which is located to the west of Zealand Island, on which the capital city of Copenhagen is located. It is known as the birthplace of the famous children's author Hans Christian Andersen.

In November 1984, a delegation led by the mayor of Odense visited Funabashi City in order to inspect the high computer use of the local government, and as a result of this, in April 1989, they established a sister-city relationship.

Funabashi has many types of exchanges with Odense City, especially in the cultural and artistic fields. In April 2005, the Crown Princess attended the foundation anniversary ceremony of "Andersen studio," a small theater in the child Museum located in H.C. Andersen Park in Funabashi.Furthermore, because the relationship between Funabashi and Odense was highly evaluated, in March 2014, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, the Prime Minister of Denmark, visited Funabashi during her visit to Japan.

Lecturers from Odense, which has become an advanced city in the areas of the environment, city planning, and welfare in recent years, have been invited to participate in training for participants to learn about superior technology and project models.
